You only have to stop lying to the page

Coming-out stories do not all start with a parade. A lot of them start with one sentence you have been avoiding — written down, not performed.

People ask how to start. They want a script for the living room, or a perfect post, or a guarantee the people they love will stay. I do not have the guarantee. I have a smaller assignment.

Write one sentence you have been avoiding. You do not have to send it. You only have to stop lying to the page. That is Day 3 of the happier-week practice, and it is also the engine of Room 308.

If Spanish is the language of the house, the same novel is Saliendo Del Closet. Same winter, same friends, same relief of walking out. If the sentence is about a bully who is not you, Bullies Among Us is the practical cousin.

When the sentence is not enough — when you need a story you can walk around in — that is what the signed books are for. Start free if you want. Stay as long as you like.
